First Grade Behavior Care Plan
"In Our Classroom, We Behave So That It Does Not Cause A Problem For Someone Else"
Fay, Jim, and David Funk (1995). Teaching With Love & Logic
We are very excited about the upcoming year. We are here to help your child have the best year possible. In order to guarantee all of our students the nurturing learning climate they deserve, We will be utilizing the following Behavior Care Plan.
Hicks Elementary will be teaching with Love and Logic's choice-based program along with Restorative Practices. Love allows children to grow through their mistakes and logic allows them to live with the consequences of their choices. Restorative practices take incidents that might otherwise result in punishment and create opportunities for students to:
◦ Become aware of the impact of their behavior.
◦ Understand the obligation to take responsibility for their actions.
◦ Take steps toward making things right.
My Goals
(To help your child)
• Feel capable.
• Learn self-control.
• Learn to respect the rights of others.
• Learn acceptable rules of behavior.
• Learn coping skills to use throughout life.
• Learn to accept responsibility for his or her own behavior.
How I Run My Classroom
1. I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.
2. Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for anyone else.
3. If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.
4. If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.
5. What I do will depend on the special person and the special situation.
If, after being given choices, a student continues to act inappropriately, he or she will be asked to fill out a redirect form. This is a type of timeout in which the student is asked to think about what was done that was wrong and what could have been done to avoid the problem. This is a program, which we hope will help students realize and correct their mistakes as soon as they occur. Students spend only a very short time in redirect. The goal is to correct behavior as quickly as possible without interfering with the learning process. Redirects will be sent home each day for the parent to sign and return.
If a student chooses not to behave appropriately, the following is a list of possible consequences:
● Apologize for the behavior/ Be given a second chance
● Loss of classroom privileges
● Reflect on behavior and write about positive choices in the future
Severe violations will be automatically sent to the office. Teacher discretion will be used at all times. Classrooms will be maintained with compassion and understanding. Each child and situation is unique and will be treated as such.
I hope that we can work together to give your child the best education possible. School should be a wonderful experience for every child. Therefore, I will be in close contact with you regarding your child’s progress in the classroom. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call the school or send a note to set up a conference. First grade conference period is from 12:10 to 1:00 daily.
